Hitachi Will Spin Off Fiber Optic Unit Japanese electronics giant Hitachi Ltd. said Tuesday it will spin off its fiber optic components unit this month, in a move aimed at making the new company a leading global supplier of such components for data and telecommunications applications. Hitachi said the unit will become OpNext Japan Inc. - which will be a subsidiary of a newly formed U.S. company, OpNext, Inc. As part of the spinoff, Clarity Group plans to invest up to dlrs 450 million in OpNext for research and development, manufacturing, sales and marketing, and product development, Hitachi said. Clarity Group is an equal partnership between Clarity Partners, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm, and Japanese trading house Marubeni Group. OpNext will expand a Hitachi's product line that already includes laser diode modules, transmitters and receivers. Hitachi reported dlrs 75.4 billion of revenue for the last 12 months.
