New vue for cinema-goers
May 1, 2004 Chief executive officer Tim Richards confirmed the site in The Parishes, along with another multiplex in Northampton, had been bought for an undisclosed sum from the Texas-based Cinemark chain. Mr Richards said the deal become effective from 6pm last night. The purchase brings the number of Vue cinemas in the UK to 41, with all employees from both cinemas set to work for Vue. The Scunthorpe cinema was opened in the Parishes shopping mall in November 2002, offering seven screens and more than 1,500 seats. Cinemark pulled out of the UK after investing £6-million on the Parishes project, and handed over day-to-day management to UCI. Mr Richards said: "We are delighted with the acquisition of these two high quality stadium-seated cinemas. "We look forward to working with the teams at both cinemas and to welcoming customers to our latest Vue outlets, where we are committed to providing the very best cinema experience for the local communities they serve." After acquiring the Warner Village cinema circuit in May 2003, Vue became the second largest cinema operator in the UK, in terms of gross box office. The combined annual admissions for the Scunthorpe and Northampton multiplexes taken over by Vue currently number almost 700,000. Mr Richards said the entire circuit was currently undergoing a multi-million pound revamp and rebranding programme aimed at broadening the appeal of their cinemas to the widest possible audience. He said apart from delivering the highest standards of movie experience in terms of great sound and big screens in Vue's auditoriums, comfort was a key part of the company's service proposition. "This is being created by making public areas such as foyers and corridors brighter and less noisy, in addition, casual seating will be added in key areas," he explained. In addition, the general look and feel of the Scunthorpe cinema will be improved to making the overall movie-going experience even more appealing for customers. » back to all media coverage articles
