Publisher of LA Hispanic newspaper gets humanitarian
award February 26, 2004 (Associated Press) The publisher and chief executive officer of the Spanish-language daily newspaper La Opinion received a humanitarian award from The Salvadoran Committee El Piche, which aids poor communities in El Salvador and Los Angeles. Monica Lozano was honored for her leadership in the Hispanic community and her work promoting health care, education and culture. "I am honored to be recognized by such a significant community organization, one that dedicates endless time and resources to the betterment of others," Lozano said. Also in attendance at the Feb. 21 event were Salvadoran Vice President Carlos Quintanilla Schmidt and fellow award winner Carlos Hernandez, boxing's junior lightweight champion. Under Lozano's direction, La Opinion has been named "Best Hispanic Daily Newspaper" by the National Association of Hispanic Publications three years in a row. It routinely sponsors Hispanic cultural heritage events and has launched statewide public information campaigns. The Los Angeles-based newspaper has a weekday circulation of 125,862. In January, the paper and The Tribune Co., publisher of the Los Angeles Times, ended a joint venture. La Opinion joined forces with El Diario/La Prensa, New York's oldest and largest Spanish-language daily, to form Impremedia LLC. Lozano was named senior vice president of the new company. The Tribune Co., which publishes the Spanish-language daily Hoy in New
York City and Chicago, plans to launch the paper in Los Angeles next month. » back to all media coverage articles
